“Don’t let gravity get you down”
—Bob Dylan
Rolfing is the world’s leading-edge system of connective tissue manipulation. It is a proven way of systematically aligning, balancing and integrating our bodies in gravity.
THE GOAL
Rolfing® is more than technique—it’s an exploration of how individuals can live as upright human beings with more ease and support in gravity. The key is the plasticity of the human body through its fascial network—the organ of structure. Through skilled systematic working with the sheets, planes and layers of the fascial fabric (which tends to shorten, thicken, twist, and bind in reaction to injury, or the strain of gravity, or emotional trauma, or bad postural habits) it’s possible to balance and align the body and free it of its distortions—to help individuals find a lighter, functional, upright way to be and live.
THE SESSIONS
The 10-session format has three stages designed to systematically organize the body in gravity—releasing first the sleeve (sessions 1-3), unraveling the core (sessions 4-7), and integration (sessions 8-10). The time frame for these sessions is flexible, usually a week or two apart with breaks between stages as needed or desired.
After Rolfing, people report feeling lighter and better-balanced. Movement seems easier as if the joints have been lubricated. Feelings of well-being reflects the entire body’s energy level. Movement and breathing are freer and, most important, the body now has enhanced body awareness and a greater capacity for spontaneous self alignment.

THE WORK
Ida Rolf’s first law of bodywork—“take the tissue in the direction it wants to go”.
In working to free up the body by separating and lengthening fascial fabric it’s sometimes necessary to go to deeper levels.. Whatever the level, a successful intervention is an invitation not a demand. It’s a feedback loop, a dialogue with the tissue. It is a collaborative process requiring the participation of the client as well as the client’s tissue and nervous system. And, in any intervention that may involve some level of discomfort, the client is always in charge.
